Education Dilution

Do you believe education/academia is being diluted by online education/online degree attainment? Also, what are your thoughts on the numerous 'storefront' colleges and universities? Storefront in the sense these schools do not appear to be creditable. For example, if a person graduates from a Clemson or Tennessee it is considered commendable because of status and name recognition. On the other hand, if one obtains a degree from a ITT Tech, Strayer University, or Bellevue University it is somewhat considered 'low valued' by academia and the employer community.

School selection is critical...

Name is everything...?

Even the brick-and-mortars have proven their inability and, sometimes unwillingness, to educate students to higher thinking processes, so I don't see much of a difference. The American education system is a failure. That's not to say the teachers are at fault because many are not, but the system, itself, is a colossal failure. As always, the best education one can attain is the one you give yourself. There is so much I have learned outside of an educational setting that what I learned inside cannot be compared.

Many college graduates are finding once they hit the real world that their educations aren't worth the paper they're printed on. They're also finding that there are more graduates than there are jobs for them and that the gulf between the two will continue to increase.

But, of course, the main objective of standardized education isn't to run your own business or learn to produce your own materials, but to groom you to work for someone else. Because the number of someone else's is dwindling, those who believe in this structure will continue to see themselves increasingly displaced. The concept of getting a good job has basically become extinct.

We either change our paradigm accordingly, or find ourselves in an unfavorable position, where it matters little where we obtained the degree, because there's no job waiting for us anyway.

I understand.

My push here also:

If one graduates from a University of Georgia versus one of these "upstarts" - the UGA grad will be favored. Another one, many black students want to go to a HBCU - but the graduates getting the jobs may just be from a more popular HBCU like Howard versus a Albany State. I believe the thinking has been: I will just get a degree without thinking that college name recognition is important. This has hurt a lot of people. Have degree but degree not valued because the degree was obtained in a home office or from an unpopular school.

Unfortunately I see this on a daily basis; students attempting to pursue a degree and the schools they went to are not accredited and therefore they are not able to move forward at a reputable university. In academia name is everything much like location is everything in real estate.

Many people have accomplished much without a "so-called" college education. The answer to your question is what does it matter if you are born a white male with contacts in America.....................hahahahahaha!

Muata responds to PM:

I am aware of that. In America education is valued in the sense of 'it is recommended that one is educated through schooling'. That's the way it is. The degree is needed to even be considered. We will never change that. Never. Those in charge make that decision. Also, going to college is a good thing. It is a foundation for learning. One thing I will not do is devalue higher education like Steve Harvey does.

Blacks are the reason the "contacts" are not present. We do not help to pull each other up. We too desperate to get all we can for ourselves. Black people don't look out for each other anymore. We will not even refer each other to a resource. Stupid. What is the excuse for that? Slavery - the go to excuse???

Steve Harvey has kids that are college graduates and a foundation that emphasizes education. I can't believe you printed that.

Muata responds to PM:

I have heard Steve Harvey numerous times: down play and ridicule those who have went to college. He has made fun of people "with letters behind their names". One of the reasons I do not listen to him. Just one reason. Believe that I printed it because I have heard him poke fun at college educated folk. One thing I don't do is list or mention stuff without my fact research. In this case, I have witnessed him and his foolish azz statements regarding college. And, black folk do not collectively value education. You know this. Black kids accuse other black kids of "talking white".

To add a little something: the foundation, well, a part of it anyway, should have taken place in the early years. College is too late. College should be the springboard because earlier education was the foundation. Just as someone said in a previous comment, they're seeing students who don't even know proper grammar.

First black Americans have to value education like whites, Asians, and blacks in Africa and the Caribbean. These foreigners are dying to get to America/Europe to be educated while whites and blacks are dropping out to hangout and smoke Black/Mild cigars. I have personally witnessed students walk miles to school to be educated. Of course, this was not in the United States.

Let's focus on the decisions WE are making, and stop with this 'preface' of what the system is doing or has done all da time. I frankly am tired of that chatter. It is weak and IMO sickening when in fact people like those responding and reading found a way to navigate through the systems purposeful traps. We all can do it with mind
re- adjustment and focus. No dismiss of the systems beat down of those downtrodden.
