Monkey and Watermelon: Fried Chicken, Ribs, and Kool-Aid…Next?

I am trying my best not to laugh. These people are being quite creative with the jokes. Well, not with the monkeys. I recall a few morphed pictures of G.W.B and a monkey.

We have gone from a killed cartoon chimp to an Easter watermelon joke, and now to another monkey comparison. The latest was shared with customers of a Barnes and Nobles somewhere in the unchanged Melting Pot.

While I am not tearfully torn-up by either of these ridiculous stunts, I am somewhat starting to have a little compassion for those who are experiencing emotional breakdowns. Not sure why – but my sensitivity for them has intensified because the racist jokes/depictions are striking a nerve, and in some cases opening up old wounds for them. That’s worthy of my ‘sympathy’…I guess??

Anyway, I will continue to focus on what I deem to be critically important. Such as using black history to combat racism and other foolishness directed at degrading Blackness:

And, while I am at it allow me, a BLACK man, to get the fried chicken, Kool-Aid, and ribs joke in before THEY do:

WE have to stay ahead of THEM!!

Reader Response:

Like the back wheels to the front, we'll never stay ahead of white supremacists. That's what the supremacy is all about when it comes to racism and white supremacist thought. The victim plays catch-up until he discards victim-hood through knowledge.

During the campaign last year, there seemed to be a rash of "quips" involving the concept of "assassination" and what not. Huckabee (at an NRA meeting), then Hillary and a third relatively high profile female pundit or something all made questionable statements which they apologized for, after first claiming ignorance of any offense.

Recognizing a pattern, (it was within less than two weeks) I started a discussion highlighting the phenomenon here in Everythang Else. The phenomenon seemed to stop very quickly. Haven't heard much like it since.

Did a BRU discussion stop it? No, but it's documented. And I didn't have to waste any time tripping. (A white supremacist will have you tripping if they have anything to do with it.)

Document these racist "slips" in a discussion (such as this one) and establish the pattern (the "slips" won't end, especially now with a Black president and the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression) You'll be non-reactionary, highlighting the pattern and presenting the "evidence."

That would have some value to me as a reader. I would do it myself if I cared deeply about the subject.

I enjoy monkeys and watermelon (fried chicken, ribs once in a while...and I used to drink Kool-Aid, but if an Aunt makes it, I won't refuse it!)

"(A white supremacist will have you tripping if they have anything to do with it.)"

This has been my point over the past two weeks.

Shall we be controlled by haters or shall we control what affects our emotions? Why allow insults and hatred to invade our spirits?

Is it that we want these crazy Americans to change? Do we expect them to because thousands of white people voted for a black man?

America is what it is, and will always be. It is up to us to politically and educationally navigate through this abyss of shyt, and be/become what those before us died to see come to fruition.

Reader EAS responds to Muata:

"Shall we be controlled by haters or shall we control what affects our emotions?"

Brian, I say no (haters) and yes, control what affects our emotions.

How does one do that? Through thought (and the grace of God.)

"America is what it is, and will always be."

I'm looking at that statement more like a question today Brian.

Muata responds to EAS:

By ignoring ignorance. By doing what most of our parents told us to do when insulted/picked on:

'Do not allow it to plague you. Move on with proving to yourself and others that you are capable of being God's ultimate creation.'

Perhaps, because of my gained cynicism and pessimism I do not have much faith in America being anything different...even with a man leading us who has all the tools to be the impetus of change.

America crushes the change that's needed.

EAS responds to Muata:

America is very different, Payne. Check it out.

Good advice on ignoring ignorance (the great sin.) It can be hard though. Be bigger, not bitter. Don't let America crush you.

EAS responds to Muata again:

The store with the missplaced monkey book...If in my vicinity, I'm the type person that would ask for the manager. After a brief walk over to the display, I would ask them to correct their error. I wouldn't be taking pictures and blogging about how wrong it is.

Each one reach one. Get it done. That's what we were supposedly trained to do, right?

Muata responds to EAS:

Your efforts would be the right thing to do.

But, there are some ready to boycott Barnes and Nobles. Waste of time IMO.

Now, this is ridiculous and when will it stop. Don't forget the store owner in Marietta or Austell selling the monkey Tshirts during the campaign. Never heard anything else from him after the death threats. Regardless, racism just like terrorism will not stop ever or at least in our lifetime. These racist people are grooming their kids and grandkids with this form of hatred. Then again, I didn't think I would live to see a Black President but I did. Only God knows.

These people will continue. Our president should be prepared for it.

I think he is very well prepared to handle any criticism that comes his way. Im sure being of a bi-racial family he may have experienced much more than we will ever know. Gotta have tough skin to be a politician thats for sure.

Education appointee email ignites firestorm

NAACP plans protest tonight over what it calls racist jokes forwarded by a CEC member

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An email ripe with racist slurs -- crudely presented as a mock debate between President Obama and Sen. John McCain -- sent by a member of Staten Island's Community Education Council to dozens of recipients, including other members of the public schools' parent advisory board, is stirring outrage among African American leaders, who anonymously received a copy of the offensive communiqué and plan to take action.

The mock photo strip, sent Jan. 4 by Salvatore Ballarino, the borough president's appointee to the volunteer board, features cartoon-like speech balloons drawn out of McCain's mouth referencing lynching African Americans and equating African American babies with excrement.

The widely forwarded email also questions black fathers' ability to support their families and states Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles are always smiling, because they did not know they were black. After each "punch line" the cartoon-like strip shows a photo of Obama's face, positioned in such a way to make him look stunned and dumbstruck..."
