My point is to drive home that the black church could be doing so much more in the area of mental illness. The church is a critical 'warehouse' that needs to be more in the forefront addressing issues that matter. All of them. Not just yours and the others we can count on our fingers. You know and I know the objective of the black church is to save souls. So many souls cannot be 'saved' when the souls are polluted with child molestation, rape, poverty, hunger, homelessness, unemployment, abuse, etc. The black church is absent on the scene. I say to some churches, step up and stop preparing people for a place to live a life of glory in the great by and by. If God is responsible for creating us, I am convinced he wants us to live mentally healthy while here on earth. If not, a lot of crazy people headed to heaven and hell. LOL.

-MuataMUATA NOWEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10163803445038361728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21548272.post-10068554893755840482009-10-08T12:46:02.574-07:002009-10-08T12:46:02.574-07:00Reader Responds to Muata:
Not all black churches ...Reader Responds to Muata:

Not all black churches Brian. My church - an AME denomination - has a non-profit Counseling Center that deals with personal, family, marriage, addictions, grief, divorce support, and the list goes on. It is full-time and managed in partnership with Emory and the GA Pastoral Care of GA Association. The counselors are licensed professionals. Our church and MANY black churches across this great nation believe in professional & licensed counselors. ITC - one of the largest seminaries in the country - has an entire degree in counseling and pastoral care. And the focus is NOT on "saving souls or religion" but helping people to save their sanity in this old crazy world!! Note: I'm sure you know as an MDiv grad that Pastoral is not the same as Pastoring. Just sharing. Smile.

Hope this helps. Often we live in "suck it up" environments where it is stressed to get over our pain, or issues of acceptance, or even really who we are, without really dealing with it. I think this is even more prevalent in the black communities. How easy is it for a white woman to say, "I went to see my shrink today." Black people hide their emotions, and never really reach out for support. I give this young man a standing ovation for where he has gotten thus far. I just hope, as others have stated, that he is able to really deal with his past hurt and emotion - or else it will come back to haunt him in a big way one day.

-MJMUATA NOWEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10163803445038361728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21548272.post-28085871893677302342009-10-08T12:39:53.695-07:002009-10-08T12:39:53.695-07:00Reader Responds to Muata:

I stopped mid sentence when I read the part referring to his avoidance of identifying with his emotions concerning being abandoned e.g. doodling in his notebook. Perhaps, the entire process for him is coming in cycles. First overcoming and then focusing on the pain. Think about it: countless people who really press forward after a tragedy do not cross the emotional bridge first. They accomplish, and work on succeeding initially. My hope is that he does not become another brotha empty with it all e.g. education, money, status, respect, etc. Too many of us are in this boat. Both, black men and black women. Something about this road to American dream for black people that leaves us incomplete...

Sorry to continue - but I am at a conference in NC. I was walking around a Goodwill facility, and I began to take stock of my life. I have done quite a bit with this life. If I died tomorrow I would be 80% okay with what I have done. However, I must say at times when I look around and think: I did it/made it under my standards avoiding my issues that were created by being abandoned by my father. We, men, must get the therapeutic help sooner. If not, we travel in this life crushing hearts (women) and damaging our characters. After reading it a couple of times though, something stuck out to me. First, let me say what this young man has accomplished is nothing short of a miracle. But, as I read, I started getting the sense that this young man is so closed of to love. Sure, he has over a million in scholarships and he is obviously a very intelligent young man, but if he doesn't address his abandonment issues, he will be yet another successful black man incapable of love. That truly saddens me. I didn't mean to damper the mood or anything, but I certainly wanted to make clear that in this young man's case, "making it" or being successful should also include learning to forgive and love. Until he does that, he will have to always resort to doodling in his notebook when the topic is emotional vs being intellectual.

-MCMUATA NOWEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10163803445038361728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21548272.post-24497837043510204512009-10-08T12:35:41.430-07:002009-10-08T12:35:41.430-07:00Reader Response:
